Ohio is home to approximately 100 different tree species, making it a beautiful place to live. However, these trees are threatened by a variety of pests that are seen quite frequently. Here are some of the most common destructive pests that are affecting the trees in Ohio.

Emerald Ash Borer

This might be the most well know pest in our area. These shiny green beetles have been decimating the ash tree population since they were discovered in the early 2000s. The beetles lay eggs in the bark of the tree, which then hatched, the larvae tunnel into the tree and feed on the cambium layer. This throws off the flow of water and nutrients to the rest of the tree and eventually kills it.

Asian Longhorned Beetle

Another beetle on the list is the Asian Longhorned Beetle. These insects target hardwoods like maples, elms, and birches. They bore into the trees and disrupt the vascular systems which will eventually lead to the death of the tree.

Dutch Elm Disease

This disease has done serious damage to Ohio's native American elm tree population. The disease clogs the tree's vascular system. You will notice wilting and yellowing leaves and eventually, death. This is carried from tree to tree by the elm bark beetle.

The above are just a few of the pests that threaten our Ohio trees. Protecting the tree population is a joint effort between homeowners and foresters. Something you can do to help is removing infected trees to minimize the further spread. If you think you have a tree that has become home to destructive pests, give us a call!
